Poland - Krakow and Auschwitz 2017
The city photographs were taken In and around the central 'old town' area of Krakow. The first set of Auschwitz pictures are from the original camp 'Auschwitz 1', along with the very last two. When its capacity could no longer cope with the numbers of prisoners to be held or executed, the Birkenau camp was built close by. With four large gas chambers and ovens, the scale of the killing here, along with the sheer size of the site is almost unimaginable. It was here that Josef Mengele, the 'Angel of Death' operated. The pictures of Birkenau begin with its main gate and railway line. The ruins are those of one of the gas chambers and crematoria, blown up by the SS when the Russian liberation was imminent.
